Floyd
The Acton Bench
Designed by Hugh Acton in 1954, reissued by Floyd

Cherished by collectors around the world, the Acton Bench, originally designed by Hugh Acton in 1954 and re-introduced by Floyd offered the bench to a new generation for the first time ever produced for the masses. The Bench was designed while Hugh attended Cranbrook, the esteemed design school located only a few miles down the road from Floyd’s HQ, where Hugh refined his perspective on design alongside the likes of Ray and Charles Eames, Florence Knoll & Eero Saarinen.

To celebrate the launch, we partnered with the Acton estate to produce a launch film featuring archival footage and imagery of Hugh at work on his farm where the original benches were built, including a voiceover where he described his design philosophy. Days ahead of the launch Floyd & the Acton estate hosted an evening on the Cranbrook grounds where the design originated, auctioning off one of the last remaining benches from original production. The product was photographed in numerous lifestyle settings paired with the Floyd assortment, showcasing the product’s endless versatility as an entryway bench, coffee table, or the perfect book & pant stand to sit beneath a window.
