Humanscale
25 Years of Freedom

For years, industrial designer Niels Diffrient observed a problem. Despite the best of design intentions, people didn’t know how to operate their “ergonomic” office chairs. So Niels set to work to design the chair of the future: one that could adapt to the sitter, not the other way around.

In 2024, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the iconic Freedom Chair, Humanscale introduced a limited edition run of the chair, supported by a compelling pop-up exhibition titled “A Diffrient Perspective: Freedom Chair turns 25” that debuted at Clerkenwell Design Week, and later traveled to various design fairs globally throughout the remainder of the year.

The exhibition featured engaging displays, and a curated collection of chairs. A historical retrospective was produced to showcase the evolution of the chair, its advancements in technology, and the various moments that solidified this product’s reputation as the leading chair in ergonomics over the last 25 years.
